Benefits of Vibrational Therapy

Holistic mental health treatment is a comprehensive, personalized approach that is designed to help patients achieve true healing in mind, body, and spirit. This approach can include a wide range of services, including vibration therapy.

What is Vibration Therapy?

Vibration therapy is an innovative technique that uses rapid miniscule oscillations to help people who have been experiencing a variety of physical and mental health concerns.

Vibration therapy is sometimes also referred to as vibrational therapy, whole body vibration (WBV), or whole body vibration therapy. The general category of vibration therapy also includes low intensity vibration (LIV), localized vibration therapy, and vibroacoustic therapy.

At Conscious Health, we offer vibroacoustic therapy, which employs low-frequency sound waves to ease stress, promote neural stimulation, and enhance patients’ emotional well-being.

Vibration therapy sessions may involve standing on a vibrating platform, being treated with handheld devices, or (in the case of vibroacoustic therapy) reclining on a comfortable bed that is equipped with speakers and specialized devices called transducers.

Vibration therapy in a mental health context has become more popular in recent years, but the practice of using sound and vibration for healing purposes is by no means a new concept. For example, records indicate that ancient Greek and Romans employed music as a treatment technique and understood that vibrations could have restorative powers.

In the 1800s, a Swedish doctor named Gustav Zander developed several fitness machines that used vibrations to increase strength and promote better physical health. His devices earned a gold medal at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, and he gave people the opportunity to use his machines at several Zander Institute branches throughout the world. Several sources cite Zander as the father of modern vibrational therapy.

Multiple studies have documented the potential value of vibration therapy for individuals who have mental health concerns:

  • A July 2022 article in the Oman Medical Journal found that college students who received whole body vibration treatment showed “significant improvement” in depression, stress, energy, and emotional well-being when compared to a control group that engaged in similar exercises that did not include vibrations.
  • The authors of a May 2023 study in the journal AIMS Neuroscience concluded that whole body vibration therapy demonstrated “a high potential for positive interference in improving cognitive abilities both in healthy individuals and in those with cognitive comorbidities.”

Also, in January 2022, the journal Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience published a study that tested the mental health benefits of whole body vibrational therapy on rodents. The team that conducted this study found that rodents who received this type of treatment showed improvements in anxiety-like behaviors, spatial memory, and motor performance.

“Our data demonstrate that a daily 10 min vibration protocol for 5 weeks using the MarodyneLiv vibration platform is able to improve brain functioning in aged rats,” the researchers wrote.

What Does Vibrational Therapy Treat?

In the previous section, we noted that vibration therapy offers benefits to people who have both physical and mental health challenges. To highlight the wide range of concerns that this type of therapy can treat, we’ve compiled lists of specific examples from each category:

Physical

Physical health concerns that may be treated with vibration therapy include:

  • Chronic pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Sciatica
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Overweight and obesity
  • Diminished flexibility
  • Age-related bone density loss
  • Poor circulation
  • Diminished muscle mass

Psychological

Vibration therapy may also be a beneficial element of treatment for people who have been experiencing the following types of mental or behavioral health concerns:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Addiction

Please note that the lists above are not meant to be complete accountings of every type of health challenge that can be treated with various forms of vibration therapy. Also, these lists do not mean that everyone who has any of these concerns will respond positively to this type of treatment.

Before you begin vibration therapy, your healthcare provider should discuss the features, potential benefits, and limitations of this service. If you have any questions about vibrational therapy or any other element of your mental health care, you should never hesitate to ask for additional information or further clarification.

How to Find Vibration Therapy Near You

For many people, the question, “Is vibration therapy right for me?” is often followed by queries such as “Who offers whole body vibrational therapy in my community?” or “How can I find vibroacoustic therapy near me?”

Using an online search engine is probably the most efficient way of locating providers who offer this service. If you are already seeing a doctor, therapist, counselor, or other healthcare provider, you can also ask them for guidance. Consulting with a knowledgeable professional can help you identify reputable providers that are best prepared to meet your specific needs.

Remember: When you are seeking any type of mental health help for yourself or a loved one, you should focus your attention on finding a provider who will assess the full scope of your needs (or those of your loved one) and then develop a customized plan that offers both personalized care and focused support.
