Understanding Holistic Therapy

Contact Us

If you’ve spent much time reading about mental health treatment, you may have already encountered the term “holistic therapy.” But what, exactly, does this type of therapy include, and how can you decide if it’s the right approach for you or a loved one?

What does Holistic Therapy mean?

Holistic therapy is an umbrella term that can refer to a variety of approaches and services, all of which are designed to treat the entire person. (One way to remember this is to recall that the beginning of the word “holistic” sounds a lot like “whole.”)

Instead of focusing solely on a person’s mind or body, as many mental health and medical techniques do, holistic therapies emphasize the mind-body connection. Many include a spiritual element as well.

Holistic therapy is sometimes also referred to as alternative or complementary therapy. Many holistic therapies involve techniques that have been incorporated into therapeutic healing practices for hundreds, or in some cases thousands, of years.

Types of Holistic Therapeutic Healing

There is no comprehensive, universally agreed-upon list of holistic therapies. However, most discussions of holistic therapy in the context of mental health programming are referring to services such as:

  • Meditation
  • Mindfulness
  • Yoga
  • Acupuncture
  • Qi gong
  • Massage
  • Reiki
  • Breathwork

Mental & Physical Benefits of Holistic Therapy

The specific benefits that a patient receives from holistic therapy can be influenced by an array of individual factors, such as what type of disorder they are being treated for and how they have been affected by that disorder.

In general, holistic therapy has been associated with mental health benefits such as:

  • Anxiety relief
  • Improved stress management
  • Elevated mood
  • Better concentration and focus
  • Increased confidence and self-esteem
  • Sense of personal empowerment
  • Processing trauma

The physical benefits of holistic therapy can include:

  • Easing of muscle tension
  • Increased energy
  • Improved quality of sleep
  • Minimized chronic pain

Holistic therapy also helps patients gain greater understanding of (and appreciation for) the mind-body connection. With this increased awareness of the relationship between their physical health and their emotional well-being, patients may be better able to identify and address the root causes of many common challenges and struggles.

How to Find the Best Holistic Therapy Center Near You

Holistic therapy can include a range of therapies and services. It can also be incorporated into residential and outpatient programming for people who have been living with an array of mental health concerns.

With all these variables at play, how can you find the best holistic therapy center near you?

The first step in this process is to understand that no holistic therapy center will be best for everyone.

A center that helps one person make tremendous progress may not be the right fit for someone else. This is why it is important to focus not only on what services a center provides, but also on how those services (and the center’s overall approach to treatment) align with your history, needs, and goals.

When you contact holistic therapy centers in your area, asking the following types of questions can help you identify the best place for you:

  • How do you define holistic therapy?
  • What types of therapies and services does your center offer?
  • How will you determine which of these therapies and services are right for me?
  • What benefits can I expect from holistic therapy at your center?
  • Can you tell me about the experiences and qualifications of your treatment professionals?
  • How do you define success for your patients?
  • What happens if my symptoms return or get worse after I complete treatment at your center?
  • Does your center accept my insurance?

These are just a few examples of the kinds of questions you may want to ask. Tailoring your questions to include your specific needs and goals can lead to more focused responses, which can make it easier to determine if a center is right for you.

You should never be hesitant to ask for clarification or more information about any aspect of a treatment center’s programming. The representatives of any reputable center should be happy to provide you with the details you’re seeking.

At Conscious Health, we encourage our patients to play active, informed roles in all areas of their treatment. This includes asking relevant questions before their treatment begins.

If you encounter a center that won’t answer your questions, or that doesn’t provide the degree of detail you have requested, you should consider that to be a significant red flag.
